The 2008 Pine View Engineering Club team placed first in the 120 lb high school division of the national BotsIQ competition in May with their bot Copperhead 3. Fighting against well-funded, well-organized teams with formalized engineering/robotics curricula and experienced faculty advisers, the Pine View team battled its way to the top of the winner's bracket, defeating Matador, Fairy Princess, Trent, Rigor Mortis, and finally Knightrous. As the only undefeated bot remaining, they lost one match to Oddbott 3.5, but came back with a vengeance and won. For a video highlighting the competition, visit youtube.
Team captain and club president Eddie Burgess graduated, along with Vincent Baiamonte, and their help will be sorely missed.
As summer 2008 draws to a close, national champion Copperhead 3 is being repaired. It did not take any significant damage during competition last year to anything but the wheels - which are being replaced. I am hoping to have it finished by Thanksgiving. I have taken all the components out, and I am cleaning the bearings and straightening what needs to be straightened, and I am redesigning certain parts that could be better. I have already finished fabricating new support posts for the front corners, to stop the drum from hitting the ground, and next time I go out to build I will take photos. School hasn't started yet, so I don't know what the 2009 team will be like, but I am excited for the best.
