So. We have basically narrowed down our quest for the perfect design to three designs. I hope we can build all three.
1) a powerful 30 lb wedge
-use short mags/team whyachi gearboxes for the drive system? insane and ridiculous but it could possibly do well.
-EXPENSIVE - the short mags are $299 each and the gearboxes are $450 each... so budget $1500 JUST for the drive weapons system. Then speed controllers, $180 each x2, and batteries, ~$100 each and we'd probably need two... so I would budget $2000 - $2250 for this bot.
2) a Copperhead copy with some important changes
-3 bar thresher instead of drum
-recessed wheels
-more angled backside
-This design doesn't have much refinement yet...
3) a full body spinner (15 lb)
-I'm almost done finishing my design (you can download my CAD drawing (.dwg) here)
The full body spinner has 12 motors in it. Yes. twelve.
10 Speed 400 Motors with 2" wheels attached that spin the drum, and 2 ML-3506 Planetary Gearmotors. Everything runs at 12V, with 20 1.2V cells spread throughout the bot. The weapon motors are controlled with two Griffin-40 speed controllers, and the drive with a Sabertooth 10 dual speed controller.
Everything worked out, the total component cost of the bot (12 motors, 10 2" wheels, SCs, batteries, and a central bearing) is about $555. This doesn't include the shell and other stuffff. And weight wise, it is PERFECT! I put the shell in Solidworks 3D and it weighs 6.32 lbs, and all the components add up to 7.7 lbs which leaves another lb for other stuff, and doesn't account for any lightening in the shell. So it's very good.
There are a few details I need to work out, such as the exact mount for the weapon motors, and the exact coupling for these motors to the wheels because the shaft is 2.3 mm (.090") and the wheels have a 3.175 mm (.125") shaft.... In this CAD screenshot, the blue and green are the batteries. The white is structure, and weapon motors and wheels, and the pink are the drive wheels/motors.
I am hoping to order a large amount of the parts for this next week, so hopefully we'll have everything by break. You will all have to check this to find out when we are building over break, because I promise we will do something physical over break.

thanks.

i'll get right to that, once i'm done with this mess of an essay for wiley...
btw that spinner sounds awesome, the wedge is cool, but the budget is insane on it><, and the copperhead thing needs more planning ...
No way we can fit the hinged wedge into the mix? like maybe on the 30lb wedge? it will save weight and basically just be motors wheels in the small body and the wedge. I'm kinda really in love with the concept.
